What are the benefits of studying abroad for a semester or more and gaining better intercultural experiences?
Preparing students for the global workplace: the impact of a semester abroad
RQ1- Do students who participate in a study abroad program have greater intercultural advantages than their peers who remain on campus?
RQ2-Are these students better prepared for the workplace?
RQ3-what might account for differential gains within the groups if any?
Mixed methods experimental study was used to conduct this study.
independent were students being on campus or abroad and the dependent were the student’s intercultural competence.
The study reflected that a semester abroad positively impacted the student’s cultural development and readiness for the workplace. This is similar to my experience with online classes , when I go back and review my academic history of traditional vs online I find that traditional had a more positive impact on my grades. To be physically present matters!
Traveling Changes Perspectives!
Howdy, Essence!
What an interesting question! I’m not at all surprised by the findings of this study. Going abroad, or really even traveling within the domestic U.S. introduces SO many cultures to people that may have never experienced or learned about them otherwise. When studying abroad, you’re experiencing day to day life of locals that are living in other countries. How they get from place to place, how they interact with one another, what and how they eat, how they work, etc. Not to mention when you participate in a study abroad, typically you are also taking a class on didn’t aspects of this country’s culture.
I loved getting to read your summary and the findings of this study for how this translates to the workplace. Great work!
