1) Assessment Details
In the ‘war for talent’, human resource strategies are increasingly focused on making the organisation an ‘employer of choice’. However, meeting the needs of employees is becoming increasingly difficult, as firms face challenges such as globalisation, rapid technological change and the differing needs and expectations of a workforce spanning Baby Boomers to Generation Y.
Select and discuss three current or emerging challenges that human resource practioners face in meeting the diverse needs of the contemporary workforce. In responding to this task, you may consider academic literature, business publications, credible online material as well as incorporating knowledge and experiences from within your own organization/industry.
Assessment Task 2: Case Study Report – 2500 words – 35%
1) Assessment Details;
Read the provided case study (on Moodle) ‘Best Practices at Best Buy’. Your task is to provide SHRM advice to the HR managers at Best Buy in the following areas: In your report, you need to discuss and analyse:
 The range of organisational stakeholders that would have an interest in the performance of the company.
 Any three environmental factors that would impact Best Buy
 Three selection methods to ensure the most appropriate candidates are selected and
 Three strategic reward approaches to retain key employees.
Your response should:
 contain some SHRM theory and linkage to the case study for each section
 be in an appropriate report format, including a title page, executive summary and contents page (which are not included in the word count)
 use Arial font, 11pt., with 1.5 line spacing
 use Word’s “normal” margin setting
 include references, cited using APA style, from at least eight academic sources. These may include academic books and journals and business/management publications
 adhere to the word count (2500 words) +/- 10%. Submissions outside this limit will be returned for editing, and marks subtracted at 10% per day for late submission, until re-submitted.

 Executive summary
o This is a short summary of the essential elements of the report from the introduction through to, and including, the recommendations. It should be independent (can be read on its own), comprehensive (covers all the main points), clear and concise. As a general rule, it should be short, only 10-15% of the length of the report, and should be written in full sentences. Write the summary after you have written the entire report.
 Introduction

o Outline main points / issues that are to be discussed
o A description of the overall purpose and key objectives
o An outline of any limitations to the report, or assumptions
 First title topic: Stakeholders
o SHRM theory re stakeholders
o Organisational stakeholders for Best Buy and their interest in the performance of the company.
o Effect on SHRM by stakeholders and for stakeholders
o Consider Best Buy’s vision and strategic plans?
 Second title topic: Environmental factors
o Research the company and determine three of the broader external factors (economic, social, demographic, workforce, legal and political) contexts that impact Best Buy and the implications of each for SHRM
 Third title topic: Selection methods
o Define terms and describe the factors to be considered in making selection decisions
o Critically evaluate options
o Recommend three methods appropriate to case study context
 Forth title topic: Strategic reward approaches
o Explain the importance of the retention of key people and the strategic considerations and challenges involved in reward management
o Critically evaluate options
o Recommend three methods appropriate to the case study context
 Conclusion
Your conclusion is a summary of the overall report. Remind your readers of your original purpose and write down what you found. Finish with a strong conclusive sentence that leaves the readers with a firm impression of the research outcome.
 Reference list
A reference list should be attached to every report and follows as a new page after the conclusion. It consists of the full citation of every cited work and uses the APA style, from at least eight academic sources.
