Carole Cadwalladr mentioned in her Ted Talk video; Facebook has allowed companies to target easily persuadable individuals with disinformation that has jeopardized our privacy and democracy. Additionally, with the response to COVID-19, the greater need for technology has shown the drawbacks caused by the accelerated drive to the digitalized world. As tech industries gain a more significant hold on businesses and how they use digital communication, it has made it impossible for people to opt-out of using certain technological services because of the risk of being left at a disadvantage. Consequently, if digital communication is a growing influence on how we communicate, it may be wise to understand how companies protect our privacy. Although for many of us, it is not reasonable to opt-out of using certain communication technologies, we should be aware of how our user data is collected and used. Because businesses have a financial motivation to sell or trade personal information to gain a competitive advantage, society should prioritize privacy and ethical practices. Additionally, supporting increased awareness of private data regulations and investigation among those who violate these rules can protect everyone’s safety.
