Assignment 3
III. Critical Learning Essay and Discussion Postings
Weight: 30% of your final grade (25% for Part 1 and 5% for Part 2)
Length: Part 1 is a 1500-word essay (approximately 6 double-spaced pages, not including cover
page or reference pages), and Part 2 is a 200- to 300-word (approximately 1 page) discussion
posting and a 200- to 300-word response to another student’s posting
Due: When you have completed Unit 8
This activity covers materials learned in Part 3 of the course content, Units 6 through 8.
Part 1: Essay
Your essay must make use of the course materials to answer one of the following questions:
Analyze the federal social policies in the United States and Canada following the Great
Depression. Provide an explanation of the two most important similarities and two
notable differences between the policy approaches taken in the two countries.
1.
OR,
Discuss how retrenchment has eroded the social safety net in Canada, with specific
emphasis on the ideological underpinnings that led this movement, and your
assessment on current circumstances/future implications. Draw on your own reflections
of the main concepts from Part 3 of the course to support your position.
2.
OR,
Locate and summarize an article published in the last year on human services policy
developments outside of Canada, the United States, or Britain drawing in the themes
from this course to compare and contrast between the concepts presented and those in
your example.
3.
Because these topics are very broad your immediate first task will be to narrow down your chosen
topic into a focused and detailed essay, being specific about which readings and which ideas have
been influential in forming your conclusion and why.
Consult at least five scholarly articles or books (preferably, a combination of both). At least three
of the sources for each essay must be from the textbook or assigned readings, excluding the Study
Guide. Rather, go to the sources it identifies for further information. In the Digital Reading Room
and in the “Supplementary Readings List” you will find additional sources that provide many
excellent sources on these topics. Try to include at least two sources beyond those that have been
TOP
assigned.
Internet research for this essay should be approached with caution to include only scholarly
sources such as those to be found on the AU Library’s online databases, government websites,
and reputable organizations such as those listed in the various units of this course, in the digital
reading and at the back of the textbooks.
Essay Format
The essay must be 1500 words long, double spaced and typed in 12-point font using a
word-processing program such as MS Word.
Margins should be no wider than 2.54 cm (1 in).
The essay must be written in a formal academic style and must use APA (American
Psychological Association) presentation of citation and references.
Essay Structure
In general, the assigned material, your own research, and your analysis of the topic will each form
approximately one-third of the essay’s content in addition to an introduction and conclusion. The
introduction must include a thesis statement.
Part 2: Discussion Forum Posting
The second part of the assignment is worth 5% of the final grade.
You will again post your own 200- to 300-word answer, using a minimum of three citations from
the course materials, excluding the Study Guide. You will also respond in 200 to 300 words to
another student’s posting in a professional manner. This means your response should add to the
content of the discussion thread by querying, clarifying, or providing additional examples or other
relevant points from the course content. Contact your tutor if you have any questions or concerns
about how to approach or complete this assignment.
The general discussion question will be:
In an age when globalization strongly influences the marketplace and has a profound impact,
does a country like Canada actually have control over its social policy?

Is this the question you were looking for? If so, place your order here to get started!
